Hi Damian,

Funny you'd build that particular Charger - a long time ago a friend of mine had one of those - very, very dull on the outside - off white paint, baby moon hubs on some unusually wide rims and fat tires.....hmmm, wonder why? The engine was heavily built (as I recall, he had the 440 not the 426 - who knows?) but I do know it featured Rodeck heads and a Doug Nash five speed - that sucker was a brute!!! ultimate sleeper...people would almost laugh...hahaha! until he smoked em' off the line! what a car!

The Goat's brought it too though - I knew a guy who packed some sort of big block with a six pack and those crazy stacks into one - straight axle up front and all - another bada$$ ride! Dark metallic blue and black padded top - whoa! beautiful car.....

As the race is on, keep up the nice work!

Update time.

While I had the airbrush out for my 53 'Vette build I thought that I needed to overcome my fear of shiny paint jobs and have a play with the Alclad Candy system.

Here's the body of the GTO before paint, with the offending articles in the background . . .


and here it is with the Silver Candy Base applied . . .


The instructions are quite simple, clean dry surface, 20-30psi (I went 25psi), no primer, just straight on to the bare plastic. One medium coat. What could possibly go wrong?

The body looks pretty good, there are a couple of tiny blemishes that I will polish out and re-coat, but the hood needs some work. There are a lot of very fine scratches that were created when I added the filler and sanded it flush with the top of the hood. I will polish these out as well once the coat is dry and have another go at it.

So far so good. I just love the Alclad product range.

Here we go with the colour coat!

Once again, simple instructions. Shake thoroughly, no thinning required, 20-25psi, light coats with 5 mins between, 2 hours to cure before handling.

First coat . . . .


30 minutes later after the third coat . . . .


Hard to see the difference in these pictures with artificial light, I will get one in the morning with some natural light, but I am impressed with this system. There is some slight graininess on the back end which I might try to polish out with a soft fine cloth, but it looks very nice to my eyes.

How bad does the paint smell when you spray it? That is, does it leave a big "toxic cloud"? Do you use any sort of mask for breathing? I've heard from the guy at my local hobby shop that this paint is pretty dangerous - but, many people seem to use it, and the results are great! - as you aircraft builders seem to demonstrate with such ease!

Next, what do you use to clean your airbrush after use? Does this paint clog, or permanently stain the paint cup etc?

Thanks Nick, I'm pretty pleased with the result. I am thinking about giving it a polish to remove the graininess, which is very slight, and then applying some Carnuba wax to give it a deep shine. I have seen a few car guys using this with nice results.

Alclad is lacquer based and does have a stronge smell than acrylics. Like you, I use mainly acrylics (Tamiya and Gunze), and have never actually airbrushed enamels at all! I always work in a well ventilated area if I am airbrushing Alclad, generally with an exhaust fan. If I am only doing a small area I am naughty and don't bother with the mask, but in this case I was airbrushing almost continuously for almost 40 minutes and with a higher air pressure than normal so I also wore a painters cartridge respirator with a solvent filter rather than a particulate one.

I run a small amount of general purpose lacquer thinner (cheap stuff from the local hardware store) through the airbrush immediately after each session, and use the same stuff on a cotton bud to quickly wipe out the cup or the bottle. The metallics in Alclad are extremely fine and I have never had any instance of clogging or staining.

Just had to stop by and see your build up close and personal. While I didn't own a GTO, I did own a '65 Lemans that one more then it's fair share of pick up street races.

I'm more then impressed with t he candy apple paint job using Alcads. WTO!!

After the B-25B is done and in the books, I'm actually going to start alternating aircraft and car builds. But my cars of choice will be 1/25-1/20 road race cars. Mostly F-1s from the mid 60's to the mid 80's. 1st one up is either the Ebbro Lotus 49 or the Lotus 72E. I have both kits, but need the proper size ignition wires, and the right dia. tubing for the fuel injection.

I will polish it out with a fine cloth and then think about whether I put a further coat or two on or just go to a clear polish.

I might test fit some of the chrome to see how it looks in place as well.

I saw in another thread that you were planning to do a few cars, we need some more traffic through the Automodeler site so please make sure that you Build Log them as you have with your aircraft builds. I am really looking forward to following your open-wheeler builds!

You can count on my build logs being posted here. Of course it's been so many years since I've built any kind of car, I sure hope I can remember the basics.

Lets see, 4 wheels just one engine but no prop. That should do it for starters.

I had the airbrush out tonight for a couple of hours so I thought I would get this build moving again with 3 more light coats of the Candy Red. I'm happy with the depth and colour now, so once it cures its on to more assembly.



I also put a coat of Tamiya rattle can grey primer on the Charger. I will let it cure for a day or two then give it a sand and see how it looks.

Having a coffee break at the desk at work and going over my plans for this year, and decided to drag this one up out of the depths of my WIP dungeon!



I will try to find the file images in my drive and replace the dreaded "Photobucket Virus" blanks, and revive this thread over the next couple of days. Once my current '55 Street Machine and '54 Corvette are completed, these 2 kits will be next up on the bench as my WIP reduction strategy continues!

If you have time, take a read through the thread to reminisce on the shenanigans that the Chev vs Hemi battles of 5 years ago created! It really is great to see that most of the names are still here, and still actively contributing.
