Just read through the entire thread. It's been so long that I totally forgot I had posted a few years ago. Your build has a double meaning for me.

1st and foremost, back in the 60's I was a Pontiac type of guy for lets say just the time I owned the Goat's baby brother, a V8 2 door LeMans in Canary Yellow. Damn fast car that almost never lost a street race. It had a real tendency to chew up front drum brakes and front tires as well.

2nd, my long time girl friend's father owned that exact year Charger with an 8 in it as it had some pick up & go. Red with I think a white interior. I actually liked the way it looked. But while you could find multiple examples of just about any Detroit iron on the streets in my Middle class suburban neighborhood, that's the only Charger I ever remember seeing, which equaled the exact number of Porsche 356 Coupes I saw as well. Now that was really love at 1st sight.

The Candy Red paint on the Goat really is looking good. Can't wait to see it once it's polished and waxed.

OK, the original images were filed away neatly and not too hard to find so I have cleansed the thread of the PhotoBucket virus. Apologies for the quality of the original shots, they were taken with an old mobile phone in poor lighting.

I dragged the Charger out tonight to review where I left off, the body was shot with Tamiya rattle-can grey primer prior to being shelved.



The quality of this is very good. The plastic is nice and hard and the details super clean and crisp. This just needs a fine wet sand and it will be good to go! I picked up a can of Tamiya TS-19 Metallic Blue back then specifically to use on this build, and it is still in its original plastic wrap, so I will open it up and test it out soon.

I will open up the GTO soon and check it out as well.

The primer coat does indeed really look quite good. I'm sure that by now it's fully cured.

I had a little time today and masked up the interior of the Charger ready for the rattle-can TS-19. It's been many years since I have painted anything from a rattle-can, so I am a bit anxious to see how this turns out!



I also thought that I should get the GTO out into the light to see what needs to be done with it. I remember it being extremely hot when I airbrushed the Candy Red over the silver base, and it powdered up quite a lot, so I have given it a couple of fine wet sanding sessions to bring it back to a smooth finish. I will probably give it one more sanding session then go back to the Candy Red to clean up the colour coat.

The GTO paint really looks good. Smooth and consistent. I'd say you've made great strides to the next level.

D., your efforts will pay off for sure. The surface looks good as smoothness but lacking some glossiness and some consistency where more sanding was needed. A fresh coat of Candy Red and a good clear will work wonders - I'm sure. As Joel said, you're getting neared of the "perfect" finish.

I'm trying not to let the Race GB totally distract me from my mission for this year, to tidy up a bunch of WIP kits. Not easy, the updates are coming thick and fast there, and it's hard to tear myself away from the '55 Pro Sports kit.

I managed to make some small progress on the Charger, the first coat of top colour (Tamiya TS-19 Metallic Blue) is down. I used a rattle can for this and did it outside but a gust of wind managed to deposit a couple of specks of dust on the roof and boot lid before it cured, so I will wet sand it out before I get on to further coats.




I'm really happy with the colour and finish at this stage.

The Charger is looking good! A long time ago I had a friend who owned one. It was a real sleeper. Painted dull white, with baby moons on fat steel wheels, and the car sat low. Under the hood though, man, a built 440 w/ Rodeck heads, decent cam, dual Carter 4bbls, headers, a Doug Nash tranny...and, Flow Master mufflers. Nobody took that car too seriously until he lit it up - he won a lot of money street racing. I like the GTO too!

Looking good, D.. Fortunately the lacquers are easy to polish and you're not going to have very hard time in perfecting the finish.

The Charger in that Metallic Blue really is looking quite good. As Gabriel said, lacquers are the easiest of all the paint bases we use to rub and polish out, so this one will surely be spectacular.

Many thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated! I have wet sanded to nasties out of the first coat, and with a mild day today with no breeze, I gave the body a second and third good coat and the parts are now set aside to cure for a couple of days. After that, a fine wet sand and on to the clear.

mmm... Metallic Blue! I do like that colour!

D., looks very smooth indeed, and not much preparation left to do. I just pulled out my orange NASCAR body from the photo tent and it's still smelling strongly as solvent. That's the downside of oily enamels. They are glossy, but they take forever to cure. I need another day ar least. Lacquers have a rougher finish but, based on the solvent used, they are ready to sand in hours sometimes.

Looks like solid coverage from that second session.

The body is done! I wet sanded the final colour coat, then a tack coat and 3 wet coats of GX100 followed straight away by an almost-wet coat of straight MLT. A few days to cure then it was wet sanded with an 8000 grit sanding sponge and polished with a soft cloth. The irony is that I think this is one of my best paint finishes yet, and it's a #$@%& HEMI!!

So the pure MLT method works, your experience shows. I cannot wait to try it myself, but my next build it's going to have some metallic lacquer on it and for sure the MLT it's going to shoot thru it.


It gotta be those Pontiac valve covers working their charm!

I'm close to the line with my second Garage Queen for the year now, been tinkering away in the background on the BMF and final assembly items.




Some little touch-ups to do on the BMF (I will use a Molotow pen for that), then wheels and decals, and finally the black PLW to go.
