So I finished up my AMT 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 yesterday evening, and I think it came out ok. I will admit that I was inspired by Chris' (hpiguy) build of "Melba Toast". Did mine come out as nice as Chris'? No, not even close, but I am please with the results. I used the Model car Garage 1970 Chevelle P/E set for some interior details (window cranks, SS454 door badges, & rear view mirror). The driver's door mirror is not included in the kit, and it came from a friend's parts box. The 1970 Rhode Island license plate came from 15q.net. I also added a P/E radiator cap (just for fun), P/E "COWL INDUCTION" logos, and P/E fender badges.

Congrats on crossing the finish. The important thing is how you feel about your build. If it meets or even exceeds your expectations, then it's a winner by all accounts.

The added details were certainly necessary, especially the rear view mirror, drivers door mirror, the Cowl Induction logos, and the super important fender badges.

So what's your next build going to be?

Thanks, Joel. I do like how it came out. The kit has decals for the Cowl Induction logo, and the badging on the fender is actually quite nice in the kit. The P/E rear view mirror is nicer that the kits, though.

The next build is a 1969 Dodge Charger in orange (hint, hint).

Hi Jim,

Nice looking build! I always liked those Chevelles. I still see them running around near where I live. There’s a ditinct look - they typically have what appear to widened rally wheels with BFG tires, ride height lowered a bit, bodies frequently still in priner and of course a roaring big block - adding to my interest, many seem to have either a manual 4 speed, or some sort of a highly modified automatic - they sound great! But yours looks better!

Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. It was a really nice build. Fit was pretty good, but the decals were really "grabby". When they were on, that's where they stayed.

Decals as you put it were "Grabby" usually is the result of the surface not being smooth enough, so that when the setting solution is applied, the decal still manages to grab and lay on the paint, making it very hard to move into position.

How did you prepare the surface for decaling?

The black paint sure seemed smooth, but obviously it's hard to tell. I used Dupli-Color Gloss Black with no clear coat. This has worked fine in the past. I applied Micro Set to the hood area, applied the decal, then had to use more Micro Set & water to get the decal to let go of the paint. Once I got it where I wanted it (or at least pretty close), I used Micro Sol to get it to settle down.

If the paint was smooth, the decals should have been easy to slide around, but with kit decals it's always a crap shoot. Maybe they had just to much glue. The important thing is that you got the decals to move to where you wanted them to be.
