Hi, Joel!
Just catching up with the build.
Again, you didn't disappoint with the level of documentation, attention to detail and - most important - with the carefully recorded technical part of the "business". I find your builds always very instructive.

Following closely this one from now on!

Gabriel

Gabriel,

Wow!!! What a great surprise seeing a post from you. I thought that you're still on your extended Romania vacation as I haven't heard from you since our last exchange of emails. So are you home now or still in Romania? I for one have really missed you and your contributions to the list.

That's some praise for my build, although I'm not so sure it's worthy of it. I'm a firm believer in learning as much about the subject as I can, and passing on that information to the list members, as it's the basic reasons why I'm building this particular race car and team markings.

At times I'm not sure if I've gone to far with the technical aspects of the build. I do remember when I was starting out or changing types of builds (Armor to aircraft to cars), or even trying to figure out procedures that I wanted to try, but had literally no idea of how to go about. Detailed build blogs were almost always where I got my information from, and the courage to actually try those techniques out. So I continue to post in the manner that I do. It also really helps to keep me focused and moving ahead, as these days I'm easily distracted.

Joel

Have been off the boards for a few weeks Joel and just catching up now.

Really great progress here and making light of those decals!

Hope the M.I.L. challenges are in hand too...

Russell,
Really glad to see you back on the boards.

Those decals actually were really quite good, just a little thicker then Cartograf decals, yet behaved nearly perfectly. I tend not to like change, and once I find something that works, I keep on going back to that well. Not always the wisest of decisions. It's hard for an old Dog to learn new tricks.

As for the MIL issues, another round with the attorney's and New York State Medicaid laws, and we're still in the middle of God only knows Where. One thing is for sure, I'm glad that I'll never reach 90+ and put my Son through all of this. As I'm finding out that even with Pre-Planning, you can only do so much.

I'm still in Romania for another two weeks, but by now I have finished all my errands and all - technically the vacation starts only now in its fullest. And where is more pleasant to spend the vacation if not amidst your favorite hobby. I have to confess I'm horribly benchsick !

We had this conversation before and I have to say that the whole modelling thing is a learning process. Otherwise there is no progress and without it no motivation. And yes, you do a very good teaching job beside just modeling.
I'm glad to see you kept the ranks here and I'm feeling almost "guilty" for my absence.

Gabriel,
As usual, thanks for your support. no need to feel any kind of guilt about your absence, you were on a fantastic vacation. Actually, I'm kind of jealous.

Sure hope that you're actually "back in the Saddle", and getting your bench up and running.

Russell,
The major issues that we're now dealing with is that the vast majority of elders, the most they do is estate planning, which is really who gets what when they're gone, and the order of that as each passes if there is Power of Attorney, Health Care proxies for elders or mentality challenged family members, of which we have all those issues. No one really seems to spend the time to understand how to prepare for your final years and protect your estate and assets. This is where we're at now. We can only do what we're doing because my bother N law is mentally challenged, and thus there are special rules do to that issue.

Last week my update post ended with the decals being gloss clearcoated. I gave that clearcoat 3 full days to dry and cure, then the rest of this week was dedicated to finishing the glosscoat.

1st step was a very light wet sanding with Tamiya's 3,000 sponge. Followed by a wet light sanding with Alpha's 6,000 & 8,000 emery cloth, then a wash in warm running water, and into my drying box to dry overnight.

Now comes the fun part of the process for me. I've tried a few brands of polishing systems: MCW 2 part, Novus 3 part, and Gravity's 3 part liquid polishes, and so far I've liked the Gravity system the best. I started with the course polish, then the fine polish, and lastly the finish polish, always applying and working the polishes in the same order around the shell: right side, front, left side, rear, engine cover, and finally the roof. At this point all the surfaces were finger touch smooth, and really shiny. My best effort todate by a wide margin. I still have a ways to go, but as my confidence increases, the final product continues to look better & better.

Now is the time that I apply Tamiya's recessed panel line wash around the doors, hood, and trunk as needed. I let the wash dry then gently remove the excess with a semi damp Q-tip dipped in Turpenoid. The places where I touched the panel lines come clean ASAP.

And finally it's time for the 1st of two wax coats. I'm still using the Gravity Protective Synthetic wax GC311, but once gone I'll be switching over to my Meguiar's Gold Class wax. The 2nd coat is the very last job before the build is finally across the finish line.

I'm not sure how well the smoothness & shine shows up in the pictures compared to last weeks pictures, but up close and personal it's world's better then what I started with. I'm still amazed how spots and small issues I can't see or just miss, pop right up in these nearly one to one pictures. Oh well, no real way to fix some of those sanding and polishing issues now.

After painting the two rear brake air intakes grills that are in front of the rear wheel wells, as well as the front grill, I really didn't like the more or less solid plain flat Black look. They just didn't look like grills. So I tried dry brushing the fronts of all three grills with Tamiya Nato Matt Black, which is a very dark Gray. The effect adds a little implied depth to the grills, but it's still not what I'm looking for. I'll give it a a few more applications and see if that helps. Anyway, here's what they look like as of now.

Thanks to all for stopping by and checking out my Porsche 935 K2 build to date. It's always much appreciated.

Super clean finish over those decals Joel, lovely work!

My suggestion for the grilles is to put some black panel line wash into the recesses and then lightly dry brush with something with more contrast, maybe an RLM grey. A bit more contrast will set them off nicely.

Cheers, D

Torsten my Friend,

What a wonderful surprise to have you stopping by & checking out my Porsche build. And I'm equally glad that you approve of my progress to date.

Honestly, I've struggled with finish prep, color coat, and clear coats, as their so different then what I use to do and accept in military aircraft modeling. Finally, I do see some decent progress.

I'm really looking forward to having you along for the rest of the ride. With luck and the needed time, I should cross the finish line late this week, or next week for sure.

D,

Thanks for the thumbs up. Coming from you, it does mean quite a lot. As I said, the gloss finish is by far my best effort out of the 6 auto models I've built to date. Finally, a lot of the prep work is making sense, and as I'm developing a repeatable finishing system so I don't have to constantly being second guessing myself, and trying different things that I see online all the time.

Agreed, that a good Tamiya Black panel line wash followed by a lighter shade of dark gray, hopefully will make those grills pop.

Looking great, Joel and I agree with you that the light finishes, particularly the white ones are the most treacherous ones.
The decals went on superbly for what I can see. Great job!

On these grilles my solution would be to paint them a dark gray and then apply a black wash, rather than dry-brushing. However, if you want to go ahead with dry-brushing technique, I will recommend oil or enamel paints rather than acrylics. The acrylic paint have a tendency to dry too fast and smear the surfaces, so slow-drying oil are much better for obtaining subtle dry-brush effect.

Gabriel,
Just knew that you would love the finish. I've come a long way from the Martini 917K. Of course I'm still using lacquer clears rather then 2K Urethane's, as I keep on reading about some of the health issues that it can cause. And believe me, I've already got more then enough issues with my health.

Just took yours and D's advice and did a heavy Tamiya recess panel line wash on those vents, then dry brushed with Tamiya XF63 German Gray. Looks 101% better. Thanks guys.

She's really looking pretty good. I'd just add a black wash to engine and exhaust system, and she'll really look the part.

Michael,
Thanks so much for your most encouraging post on my build blogs. I truly like doing them, and if they help anyone then it's the best reason of all to continue doing them.

I've been working on the last of the details, and there's a ton of them. I added the Aluminum bumper plate that was just gloss white before, as well as the rear bumpers. Strange, but I've seem them in the body color and black, so I opted for Black just to break up the look of the rear end. With luck, I should cross the finish line hopefully Friday unless the unexpected pops up like it usually does.

Thanks Joel

definitely need to make a few little "tweaks" to her that I didn't think of when I was initially building her up.

Also, want to rub down the tire treads a bit to give that used feel and paint the fuel tank grey... But hey, here's me rambling on high jacking your build... nuff said. Back to topic!
