Another great update Gabriel, making good progress despite the setbacks from the plastic and the putty!

I will be checking out the YT updates as well.

Gabriel,
The side by side comparisons as you go through the two Gordini builds really shows off the differences between them, and how you solved one issue after another.

Well, there are still a few issues to be solved, either from the poor engineering od the kit, either from my choices...

I really felt your frustration with the Liquid Green Stuff shrinking even after you were assured that it wouldn't. I learned the hard way after many aircraft builds where I used a lots of filler in places, that it eventually started to show even months after the build was completed. I posted and complained to anyone that I thought could help, and finally the reasons became apparent . Anything that contains a liquid thinning agent will shrink into its final solid stage over time as the thinner eventually completely dries from the inside. How long that takes varies by the type, amount, humidity, etc. but they all will shrink. That's why epoxies are best as there is no shrinking unless of course you add some thinner yourself.

You didn't mention if you glued a plastic backing plate to the headlight holes. That would also help to stabilize the putty. These days I go even further with filling the cavities with scrap plastic so that there is as little filling as possible needed. And I do that with epoxy or Gel CA glue. only a final skim coat for blending of a traditional type of putty.

You have read my mind! Actually the headlamps phantoms reappeared after 2K application and I was (I still am) in deep misery I need to take two steps back now. And I had Miliput all along near to my bench!

Looking forward to your next update. In a few I'm heading over to checking out your YT vid on the build.

Unfortunately, there is going to be no video on this build, nor on the Mustang build. I started the build in Romania and now my work bench is too cramped with ongoing builds / primed or drying parts, so pretty much "I'm working on my lap". Besides, most of the video editing time was invested in getting my online business running...

I have driven a virtual version of the Dacia in an online game called Playerunknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). Don't know the version, as that is actually the first place I ever heard of this car and I am not familiar with its development. I only knew it was from somewhere around Eastern Europe as a lot of imagery in the game is Soviet looking rather than strictly Russian.

Shell, that should be added to "fun facts"! I'm really thrilled that somebody else but the Romanians know about the car. I even see people trying to sell Dacia 1100 as Gordini on the European market ))

D., no video on this one, sorry!

You know, I had three other Heller models in my shopping basket. Now, after this experience, I'm happy I had no money to buy them, because I have erased two. I find they just don't worth the time due poor engineering.

UPDATE (of the old):
The engines have received a wash with Van Gogh oils, and they are ready to install:

The idea was to make them look "used, but not abused":

The seats and the bench on the lux version were installed with superglue:

All together was sprayed with a coat of MicroSatin, thru my H&S Evolution 0.4mm@20psi:

The rally version had the exhaust manifold and the muffler installed:

The exhaust pipes' tips provided by the kit (left) proven useless, so I scratched other ones from chromed sprue (right):

For rally version, the exhaust pipes were also scratched, this time from unchromes sprue, which I latter painted with Vallejo Air Silver

And this was the moment when I thought my headlights drama it's over; it looked good under the primer:

The wheels of the luxury version chromed. In order: Mr. Surfacer 1500 gray, Testors GLoss Black Lacquer, Alclad II Chrome, with only flashing break in between, all sprayed thru H&S Infinity 0.15mm@20psi. A coat of Aqua Glos followed, to protect the metallic pigment:

The seats and the bench after vanGogh oil wash. After the wash was dry, the excess was wiped out with dry q-tips:

The engine on the luxury version installed, muffler and pipes included. Also the fueling pipe added to both versions:

The rally wheels painted with Tru-Color Paint 755 Carbon Flash, diluted with MLT. A/B H&S Infinity 0.15mm@20psi:

The rally body received the second coat of ACE Almond Gloss Enamel (the trim color of this version), after the first coat was polished with Tamia Sanding Sponge 3000 grit:

I went forward with detailing the engine compartments: the required decals on each engine, the air inducers, air filters, carburetors and the blue "things". I'm not sure what these things are - probably air filter supports - but I know I had to scratch build'em because the pieces from the kit were, again!, a bad joke. Initially I wanted to paint them black, but since I made them from blue stretched sprue, I decided to let them bare, "for added interest":

And with this update I'm getting closer to the real building time; however, the build has considerably slowed down with the advent of the Mustang and because the problems encountered. Besides, for the rally version I'm going to need some 3D printed parts, and this is going to take me a while, since I never designed them yet.

Gabriel,
Wow, are you making a ton of progress on both cars. The headlight grill really came out looking like there just wasn't two more holes for lamps. Very nicely done.

As for the interior, your conversion for the two seat rally car is done quite well.

Both engines are coming along nicely. Those two Blue pcs aren't stiffing rods, but are breather hoses for the engine directly from the air intake. Not so sure how well they worked compared to a usual valve cover breather with a filter to keep the oil in the head.

Great job so far Gabriel. The oil wash really makes the seats pop.

I have some fond memories of the R8. My best friend, as a kid, his parents had a grey R8. My dad build, what I believe is an AMT kit, sometimes in the late 60's or early 70's. I still have the majority of his models, incl. this one

Hi Gabriel,

You’re back and going full speed ahead! Nice project and very clean work. It’s too bad about your headaches with filling the grill. While I use filler too, I can also report that almost each time it’s a gamble - which is weird! The product is the same, sometimes perfect, other times not at all!

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Unfortunately, the "ghost" of the left side headlamp re-appeared after the 2K! I'm back two steps now. I will post the pics later.

For now, there isn't that much in there. I want to populate the back seat with the "racing regulars": extra reservoir for oil and its pump, electric and medical boxes... In the front, I'm going to add the navigator's radio and some other "electrics". For the seats I found replacements already in my spares box. The cage is provided by Heller in the same vinil as the seats, and there is no deal - I will need to scratch these too!

Aham! Thanks for clarification. Then if they are hoses, they should be black, I guess.

Thanks, Jesper!
It was some interesting car our Gordini. One of my neighbors had a burgundy one as well (Dacia 1100), but by the time I grew up they were pretty much "classics" already, being superseded by the newer Dacia 1300 (Renault 12).
Now all makes sense. You come from a "dynasty" of model builders! I wish I would have the space to keep my own models, let alone my father's ones!

I see you're enjoying a very creative period as well. Congratulations!
Well, it seems that I'm going to use from now one just epoxy putty, as Joel suggested in another post. For hairline cracks, acrylic putty does just fine.

UPDATE

Here I have applied what I thought it's going to be the last paint coat.

Unlike the rally version, for the luxury variant this is the definitive color. ACE Almond Gloss Enamel, sprayed thru my H&S Evolution 0.4mm @ 20psi:

Wheels pained and some dry pigment added. I didn't want a brand new Dacia, but one with some mileage under the hood:

And then I went a little ahead of myself, and sprayed the body with Splash bi-component 2K. The clear was pretty good, but I forgot to do the decals:

The resin went on almost perfect, with a few little dry grains here and there, but... the ghost of the right headlamp went to haunt me, and a faint circle re-appeared (not visible in this picture):

And now I am up to date with the dual build as well. I'm mostly focused on the luxury version (commissioned), because the Mustang took the fray.
However, this morning I have polished for the umpth time the area where the headlamps supposed to be, and the small imperfections in the resin. I need to repair the front mask (again), cover it with paint, and then do the decals (I hope I won't forget again).

Gabriel,
The Luxury version looks outstanding in it's Almond Gloss paint and Splash 2K finish. you can really see the deep shine in the doors in the last picture.

I'm hoping that the shrinking Green Stuff mask for the headlamp opening is fixable without having to strip the grill area.

Thanks, Damian. Well, it looks like my modeling time has considerably shrunk. I lost already the "parallelism" in this build, and it will be very difficult to regain it, my job and other builds included

Joel, the things are pretty bad with the "green stuff". I guess the best deal is to strip back the paint and primer to the bare plastic and to apply a coat of epoxy putty - what I should have done from the good beginning, in the first place.
Yeah, the painting / clear coating process went on decently, but since I forgot about badges and with the front mask problems, it counts only as exercise, because it needs to be redone.

UPDATE

The engine compartment's assembly done:

The internal fenders are really crappy: no locator pins and the edges are in fictitious angles. I had also to clip the air filter edge for the engine compartment lid to fit properly (I hope it will). The dry-fitting of the rear panel with the main body showed yet more question marks. Heller is loosing a customer here!

Gabriel,
Good luck with the redo on the light hole. don't forget to glue a plastic strip behind it as a backing and support for the epoxy. I'm completely confident your fix turning out perfectly.

The engine compartment really looks good. And those inner fender wells don't look bad at all.

Thanks for your support, Joel! It looks like today I've got over the ghost light problem.

Thanks , Russ! I wish I would have a real toy like that. In my native hilly riverside area, it must be pure joy to drive a classic one!

UPDATE - unexpected progress
Well, for today I had completely different plans, but two rounds of heavy rain had me trapped inside my home. Hence some unplanned progress in my dual build. Because the rally version of the Dacia 1100 is pretty much behind her sister, I decided to dedicate the "modelling time bonus" to the rally version.

I have chosen a "retro" rally graphic scheme and cut the masks straight onto the body from Tamiya masking tape 10mm and 18mm:

The "white" spaces under the masks are reserved for sponsorship decals, which I haven't designed and printed yet:

For the main color of the body I have chosen a tweaked Carbon Flash Pearlcoat from TCP. The masks were removed right after painting the darker color, while the paint still wet to minimize the tear at the edges:

Although the edges aren't perfect, I have been in tighter spots and I am confident I can get away fairly easily this time:

Retouches needed, and perhaps a first coat of clear to seal the two colors under the same shell.

Cheers!
Gabriel

Well, thank you! I don't find it "inspirational", and by no means as gripping and breath-taking as the "new" color schemes, but, truth be told, the Romanian racing teams were (and still are) amateurish. This is the image I want to call here.
And thank you for your concern - I stay as safe as I can. Everything just fine this hurricane season!

It is a little to harsh to the eye, but the decals will try to deal with the high-contrast.
I think you have guessed the sponsorship already - it's a 3D printing business !

Gabriel,
That was my main thought as to sponsors, but you do need more, or will you then use real or generic sponsors?
